Within the ostensibly glamorous, aesthetics-driven world of physique competitions, judgement of the female body takes centre stage. This blog outlines the struggles faced by both competitors and women in the general population when striving to achieve the ‘ideal’ body. This quest for physical perfection can cause chronic physical and mental illness; and can lead to the development of, or trigger pre-existing, patterns of disorderly eating and body dysmorphia. I aim to provide support, and to leave the reader with a greater understanding of the origins of their self-judgement. In this way, we can all hopefully learn to accept our bodies – regardless of shape and size.
